Shot Yeasayer for the third time a couple weeks ago when they played the Natural History Museum. First time to hear the new songs.. so different and great!! I didn't hurt things that our good buddies Warpaint opened up the night with a major jamfest. The next day i headed over to their video shoot to get some behind the scenes shots, which i got, until my mirror flew right off my camera and I was done for the day. Snowy daze

I'm back in LA, got a good night's sleep, sat in some traffic, then drive thru Starbucks, it's good to be home. Here are some pictures from the weekend. Snow is nice, unless its the day before a shoot that you've flown to Italy for, and the shoot is supposed to look like spring. The shoot days ended up being sunny, bone chillingly cold, but sunny. So these were some walking around shots from Sunday.

Walked around Saturday. Went to the best place ever, called Eataly.
Imagine, Whole Foods, but not pretentious, a whole floor for beer and wine, a room where you can buy whole wheels of cheese, another room that has huge gourmet meat hanging, that is "supposed to be covered in mold." Now thats fancy!! and the place includes 6 different restaurants, we had pizza, which it turns out no one knows what you're talking about unless you ask for piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiizza, then they're all over it. Also, our cab driver loved Korn, (the band), and had a stuffed little person to prove it. Plus i've watched a lot of BBC, to try to negotiate through my jet lag at night.

I finally had Pasta tonight. No wonder everyone is so nice and happy here. After a meal like that I feel like hugging people and yelling out bonjourno. Really excited to start shooting tomorrow, there's been a lot of location scouting and snowfall the last couple days..

I'm finally able to post the info for the first show and am so excited, I can't wait to see them on the walls. It's been a bit of a whirlwind month, but we've built a wall, painted, and recorded some great songs in the spot already.. keep checking in.. please pass it around to all your friends and foes.. do people still have foes?

Just got back from shooting a Myspace Secret Show in Oooooooooooooklahoma cty. I had no car in the morning so I walked around the hotel which was out by the airport.. It snowed a foot there, which was more than they'd had in about 30 years.

I haven't put up a large photo post in awhile so here goes.. Beach House was supporting Grizzly Bear at the Palladium in October. My good buddy Jason is their manager and hired me to come hang out and take some pics before during and after the show. I have to say i was fighting a crazy head cold, and was looped up on a bunch of cough medicine so its a little hazy, but it was fun, and the show was really amazing. This brings me to my point. I feel weird being a photographer in the photo pit. I think i have control issues, and this show wasn't very crazy with photographers, but I rarely want to post photos from the pit, because I feel like there are probably 10 of the same photos floating around by 10 different photogs. Although the pits are super comfortable, convenient, and necessary, I feel like I'm in a treestand with 15 other hunters waiting for the dancing deer to walk by, and then we all get to fire off machine guns for awhile and its over, all the while trying not to knock each other out of the tree or shoot each other in the face on accident. I am jaded. I try to remember the fact that I get to see all these bands closer than everyone else, the fact that i get the seat right in front of the most dedicated fans. How excited i was to shoot Queens of the Stoneage at the Palladium years ago, limping in and out of the pit on crutches with a broken leg and my half broken nikon n90s... anyway, no more jaded, here are some photos from in and out of the photo pit.

I am late getting my Australia photos up, and have a good amount of travel next week, its the first of the month and i forgot to send rent, phone bill paid today, been working to get a new project. started with 4 friends that i'm really excited about, but it requires building, writing proposals, getting a business license and working on promotion ideas, printing another portfolio, setting up 4 december shoots so far, and a personal project, I've been a little swamped lately. I dropped Lyla off at daycare this morning and I had to go check out a location, but i just decided to start driving east instead to clear my head, because I had a couple extra hours. After zoning out for about 15 minutes, getting off the freeway and heading towards the mountains, I ended up parked in front of this canyon and bridge. 40 minutes later I was deep in the middle of a silent canyon looking at a waterfall. Waterfalls are weird, because they can instantly make a regular hike into some kind of an adventure, and walking around a corner and finding one on accident, I felt like I struck gold. Back to the house by noon. These times are also one of the main reasons that I love living in LA. Its so fun to explore, it reminds me of being a kid.

I've been wanting to update, but have been too busy in Melbourne, walking more than we have in years, going to huge greek weddings, eating out every night, which is breaking the bank, getting pounded by the sun almost 100 in Melb., watching horses learn to prance out in the country and buying a 6pack of beer for $20, and now hanging out in a fancy hotel in Sydney, getting ready for a ferry ride across the bay and going to an awesome art show tonight.. More photo updates later.. probably when we get back cause the internet is $24 a day here.. yikes!! we miss everyone.. but are having a blast..

I'm in Asheville, NC for a Baroness Secret Show tonight.. It's beautiful here. I went out to walk around and saw this kid on the other side of the lot. As I started walking over there the sun peaked out for about 30 seconds just in time for the shot, was covered by clouds after 3 frames, and it was back to work for him and to the Waffle House across the street for me.. I didn't get his name because the mower was way too loud..

The night Patrick Swayze died I was shooting stills on a video in Hollywood, and on the way home in front of the Roosevelt hotel, people left Point Break and Dirty Dancing VHS tapes, (you wouldn't want to waste a DVD) flowers, candles, playbills, their hat, and a bottle of Arizona iced tea in memory.. It reminded me of this awning i shot earlier that day.

Last night was the awesome Pro'jekt LA Summer Series 'sounding still' photo Exhibit. Thanks especially goes out to Jessie Cowan who set the whole thing up and thanks to all our friends who came out for support.. It was soo fun. Michelle just called and told me it's Buzz Aldrin Day in LA.. What it means I guess is that he gets an interview full of crappy questions on My Fox LA, I like Jillian, I mean she joked that she was pregnant with Buzz's baby right when he hugs her, but the others are such doofs. Well here's a photo i shot of Buzz for Swindle mag. a couple years ago.. He was awesome, and this was taken the morning of the story of the female astronaut in the diaper who drove across some state to stalk that other astronaut. Do you remember that? Yeah, he was getting calls about it the whole morning I was there, as an expert on astronauts. What a strange life people lead. Happy Buzz day Buzz.

This is how the first picture went down. I was in Vegas a couple weeks ago to shoot Glasvegas playing at the Viva Las Vegas wedding chapel. Across the street there was a Marilyn statue and a blue pool underneath a couple empty swings in front of a gentleman's club. About an hour later, someone turned to me and said, "hey look, there's someone on the swing." I crossed the street and asked the girl if I could take her picture. She told her friend she'd call her right back, looked at me and said "Five bucks". I told her I didn't have $5, I was a photographer working across the street and just wanted to take a picture of her. "Where are you gonna put em?" I gave her my website, she put it into her phone and said "you're lucky, I never let anyone take a picture for free." She started to pose on the swing and I asked her to just stay like she was and to call her friend back. I shot four frames and said thanks. Then she said. "And by the way, I'm not a fuckin' stripper, so don't say that I am on your website." so I promised. She's not a stripper.

Metal shows are the best.. most intense crowds, craziest bands and loudest music.. I shot chimaira in Cleveland.. and the crowd was nuts.. it was a myspace secret show so you can go there for all the photos.. but here are some of the extras.. at night, all these pigeons were swarming the lights at the tops of all the buildings.. it was really amazing..

I was talking to Anthony this Sunday (here is his band) and we ended up talking about technology and where we stand, which is a very broad topic I know, but it seems like its not an uncommon conversation to be had these days. He ended up saying, he finds himself feeling sorry for old unused technology, like he need to swoop down and make it happy again. His band's next release is VHS only, of animations backing-up/going along with the new songs, its going to be AWESOME. That being said, my brain clicked that I was feeling the same thing, but dealing with photography. I had written off film for the most part, (not in general, just for myself) because the quality of digital, and the ease of working with the photos is so much quicker and controllable. But I could never get rid of my old cameras. My Nikon FE2, now lensless, because I sold them, Yashica TLR 120, Polaroid bigshot, Zeiss Ikon 120 foldout, Olympus stylus epic zoom 80, I just couldn't sell them. Jeremy just got a Leica and I shot some frames with it at a BBQ and I was hooked again.. the mystery is back!! Here is the photo of Lyla and Jeru that came from that click.
So I bought some new batteries for the old point and shoots, and am looking for a nikon manual focus 35 or 28 so i can bring a little slice of film back into my life.

This past weekend I shot a story about the Vermont House for Paper Magazine, I can't put up any of the photos yet, but here is a shot of one of their cats, just to keep your mouth watering. Also, shot and hung out with Ponytail when they played the Echo in LA. They were awesome! And got to see Green Day for the first time, while shooting them at Webster Hall in NYC for Myspace. They obviously completely blew me away. So tight, every song was awesome and they looked like they were having more fun than anyone else there.

New Portfolio - redux V. 3. psyched

I've been working hard on a whole new portfolio this last month or two. I dove full force into all of my photos.. I mean ALL. I ended up with over 800 shots, spewing out of three boxes, ready to be thrown all over the floor, picked, disgarded, loved, hated, fancied and denied. They've been waiting to be called to duty all these years and this is finally their time.. for some of them at least. I'm really taking a different approach by sifting through old shoots and doing a whole new edit. picking the photos that weren't picked before and working with those, and I have to say, I'm really excited how its coming together so far. Here are some rough potential ideas.

I had a big sick day on Monday Mar. 2nd, I'm pretty sure it was food poisoning, but who really knows.. anyway, i only get Thurs-Sun papers at the house and i forgot to get a paper that day. What did come that day was the phone book.. so the Mar 2nd collage, as of now is from the phonebook. If someone does still have the Mar. 2nd paper and they want to give me a buzz I'll do it to it.. also I'll put up three more tomorrow, so we're all caught up.. I'm also figuring out how to UV coat these.. so hopefully they won't fade..

PDN/Billboard summer music contest

I entered the PDN/Billboard contest and my photo of a soldier in Kuwait crowd surfing ,placed in the crowd category. I didn't win, but its definitely nice to be in the magazine.

I was out of town for a couple days shooting deerhunter for secret shows up in SF.. it was an amazing show.. truly.. one of the shots is right here at the top.. the next two are the daily collages that i fell behind on.. I thought of doing one with the SF Chronicle, but decided to keep it real and stuck with the LA times..

Downpour of sun

In LA even when it rains for a couple days, that sun will blare through just to let you know its still there. This is the only time a downpour has blocked my view of the sun.

I got 3 papers delivered to the doorstep today. Is this why the LA Times is loosing money?
Or are they hiring blind paper carriers. I thought of doing 3 collages today, then i realized its almost noon, and i need to head to the studio.

A kid came to the door a couple months ago, asking if I would pay for an LA times subscription so he could get a scholarship. He was a skater, trying to "get his act together" and so i threw down $20 for his cause. I'm sure most of it went to him and not the LA Times, right?? I never got my papers, and called them yesterday to get the scoop. They apologized, called me sir way too many times, and assured me that papers would start gracing my front lawn in the morning. Low and behold TWO PAPERS!!! The God's have shined down upon me once again. While flipping through the paper, I didn't find much to read. I'm more of a talk radio kinda guy, but these tough economic times call for tough economic measures. That's why I have made a collage to sell for $25..(this one even has a Joaquin Phoenix in it which would usually command at least $35) I plan on making one each day from the LA Times, until I run out of ideas or glue. It's 8x10" fits perfectly in a frame and the shipping is included! what a deal.

It will be dated and signed, so, if you have that paper, you can even play a fun game called forgery, where you remake it exactly, resell it to someone else, and get some or all of your money back. Not a bad deal if you ask me.
